The most vivid example in China is Xinjiang, which is a remote region far northwestern China on the doorstep of Central Asia. The Uyghurs have always chafed at Communist Party and at Han Chinese rule. And so they've rolled out what I think is probably the closest thing we've ever gotten to a truly dystopian, sort of Orwellian surveillance state. If you're a Uyghur, moving around in Xinjiang, outside or even inside your home, basically everything you're doing is capable of being recorded and analyzed in real time.
