In the 1970s and early 1980s, most critically ill patients had pulmonary artery catheters placed. It was almost part of the ICU admitting physical to get a pulmonary artery catheter. And it taught us a lot about physiology in patients who are critically ill and with shock. Over the years, there's been a lot of interest in looking at therapeutic responses.
