I asked him if I could adapt one of his stories. And he wrote back a very charming and friendly letter saying, no, I couldn't. He said, you know, I'm not interested in seeing anybody's adaptation of my work. All of my fiction is of a piece. It's all sort of one huge pastiche that he just continues to add to. So it only made me respect him all the more.
