The disappearance of local people whose presence was documented by the crown for taxation purposes would not have gone unnoticed. Dr. Irwin shared with me his skepticism of this conclusion and that from his familiarity with the historical records, it is more likely that the remains are those of people who were recent immigrants to the area and not members of the well established local Jewish community.
