As a girl her brilliance was recognized. Her compositions said to be unlike anything ever heard were applauded at fortnightly performances that were central to the academy's curriculum. At 15 she lengthened her skirts and teased other girls with a flawless front writing, I have grown tall a good deal and where my golden tresses done up in a net cap. Scholars have suggested that the appearance of the volcano in Emily's poems is always autobiographical. That somehow she sees a kinship with that frightening geological wonder. Teeming beneath her own surface she recognizes a similar force of raw natural power.
