Like most of these other rich aristocrats, you had a job in the Roman bureaucracy. The baths at your country villa break, and nobody knows how to fix them. There are only a few soldiers left manning the forts along the coast that are supposed to prevent this kind of thing. You get yourself a horse and armor and a sword, and you try to organize some of your dependent peasants into a militia. And you use that surplus to arm them.
