In 1959, surfers were trying to counter the phony image of surfing portrayed in Hollywood Beach movies. They made documentary-style surf movies and showed them in school gyms around the country. John Severson became a major figure in the dissemination of surf culture throughout the world. Mickey Dora nominated himself to be the spokesman for Surfing's Rebel Spirit.
