Chauncey and Francis Higbee were sons of a prominent Latter-day Saint Elias Higbee. Both brothers became estranged from the Church after their father's death. Robert D. Foster was elected as a justice of the peace in Nauvoo, but he also wanted to develop the city. Joseph Smith confronted Charles Foster publicly over letters written by an anonymous individual criticizing his brother.
