I have no trouble whatsoever imagining that we can create in a computer or nudge a computer itself to creating unanticipated life forms. I don't know if you would call it artificial intelligence at all, but something like that could very easily have some of the aspects of life as we know it and not others. There is no known system in ordinary physics where it's really true that even though it has both an area and a volume,. The number of bits of information that we could imagine putting inside it scales like the area of the boundary rather than the volume.
Welcome to the February 2023 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number — based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good — and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!
