The Civilian Conservation Corps was a big thing during the New Deal in the 30s. The CCC hired jobless young men to build national parks and roads. John Woods went AWOL after being dishonorably discharged for refusing to do his job. He spent years barely making ends meet by working in construction and handling labor tasks on farms.
