Joyce distinguishes between what he calls proper and improper art. Proper art is static, improper art is kinetic. Kinetic art moves the observer either toward or away from the object. Most novelists at the time of Zola have been didactic pornography. Look at who wants to look like a Picasso. The object becomes radiant because of the rhythm.
