The Reaction to Gauguin
Gauguin set the precedent, I think, because it was definitely influenced by him. He still made great art, though. He did something revolutionary for his time. He brought back the art from that part of the world and he said, look, there's another culture here. And at that time in Europe, it wasn't something that they could actually accept.
