The Rise and Fall of Empire in the Americas

The morant bay rebellion in Jamaica in 1865 was a defining moment in views of empire, says Catherine Hall. It happened in the wake of the so-called Indian mutiny of 1857 and prompted fears that there would be an outbreak of black people against white people. The impact of the rebellion was greatly increased because of it happening in the aftermath of India's revolt. But opinion was much more divided in relation to Jamaica in 65, 66 than with India after 57.
