Trance Permeates the Lives of the People
Ancient greece was utterly steeped in trance. The trance states that permeated the peninsula were the beating heart of greek spiritual tradition. We don't realize how treasured this state was and is, because we don't experience it on a regular enough basis to know this is something precious at the heart of all cultures. There is a tension between the silence of the monasteries and the ecstasy of the villages. Some of the buddhist texts will go a long way to make sure the reader understands that the states of consciousness being talked about in budd Buddhist texts are not the same as those experienced by village goddess worshippers.
