What Is a Performance Enhancing Drug?

Use of PEDs was mainly seen as an issue in communist countries until the 1988 Olympics. East Germany won 40 gold medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and during the 1980s some athletes set world records that were almost unbeatable. Around 9,000 people were given PEDs and many faced issues in later life including infertility, heart disease and cancer. In recent years Russia has been banned from both the summer and winter Olympics due to a state sponsored doping scandal.
