The Nature of Consciousness
consciousness is that which makes all experiences possible, but not itself an experience. It can help to think of it like a cinema screen on which movies are being played. Consciousness colors everything we experience and is the medium through which everything is known or experienced. Until you know the nature of the thing through which everything else is known, you can't really know any particular thing.
