The Dinosaur Rush
When Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Kope entered their race to identify new species of dinosaur in the 1870s, paleontology was still a new discipline. The professional quarrel that replaced their earlier friendship played out for all to see, threatening to destroy both their reputations and livelihoods. Their rivalry also led to the discovery of dozens of previously unknown dinosaurs - immortalized as the dinosaur rush or alternatively, the bone wars. They introduced to the world such famous names as Allosaurus, Brontosaurus, Deplodocus, Degasaurus and Triceratops.
