What Precipitated the Arab Revolt?
On April 19, 1936, Arab notables in Nablus declare a strike. A few days after that, the Mufti gloms on to this movement and places himself at the top of it. This was kind of his finest hour, says historian Yossi Ben-Ghiat. He would later be famous for allowing with Hitler during the Second World War but at this point he is the undisputed leader of the Arabs of Palestine.
