In china, kids in elementary schools learn to write characters by and u it's a big part of the whole educational system. The handwriting mummerization method is distracting and counterproductive because of its inefficient use of cognitive resources. I think it's important to also reference, just where does this come from? In this is, i think, an outcropping of thousands of years of chinese traditional culture in learning the language.
