Cold Sweat - The Base and the Drums
There's a lot more to an iconic funk groove than just the drum part. There's how they fit in with the drums to make a full groove. I had a really good time trying to recreate the sound and feel of each of these recordings by playing bas guitar, keys and horns along with the drum parts that russ recorded. So first of all, on cold sweat, there's bernard odam. The base and the drums are always going to have a special relationship, and that's certainly true here.
Drummers like Clyde Stubblefield, Zigaboo Modeliste, and Bernard Purdie defined the sound of the bands they played with not because of their flashy chops, but because they knew how to lock down a groove. On this episode, Kirk goes deep into one groove apiece by each of those drummers - Stubblefield on James Brown's "Cold Sweat," Modeliste on The Meters' "Cissy Strut," and Purdie on Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" - with help from special guest drummer Russ Kleiner.
