The Dimension of War in the Cold War

If war broke out there, if you lived within a couple hundred miles on either side of that frontier, then your life was going to be deeply embedded in it. There were constant expeditions going back and forth, constant fighting, constant raiding. So the Roman state existed to service the Roman army. The Roman army existed in the east to protect this frontier, essentially. That's what it was there for. When you paid taxes, the taxes that you were paying were going toward paying for the Roman war machine.
