The Sputnik Satellite
Sputnik was about the size of a beach ball and could circle the entire planet in just over an hour and a half. A few months after Sputnik goes up, the Americans try to send their own satellite into space. But eventually, NASA scientists figure out the kinks and send the first American satellites into space. Then another, and another. Oh, you think your satellite is fancy? Look at our American satellite. It's super shiny and it has a cosmic ray detector. Well, we just sent a dog into space in hours. Well, We're gonna send two monkeys into space.
