Taiwan is located at a critical point in the first island chain which stretches from Japan down through Taiwan and into the Philippines. If China takes over Taiwan, Japan has grave doubts as to whether the United States can or would come to its defense. Over 90% of the world's most advanced semiconductors are made in Taiwan.
