Simon feels he has to do the right thing because they're on this ship together. He's going to help Jane whenever Jane needs help, even though he doesn't trust Jane. Jane is looking for ways to betray Simon. She can't comprehend what it would mean to sacrifice your life for another person. There's an element almost, if it's taken so far in that direction, there's almost a sociopathic inability to morally reason.
