Arturo Schomburg was a well-known historian of black culture who had been born in Puerto Rico to a black mother and a white father. He moved to New York in 1891, he was part of the Harlem Renaissance. So he was the perfect person to name a mostly black and Puerto Rican Harlem school after. But it took a lot of back and forth with angry parents to explain that gives you an idea of the mood in the city at the time.
