In Our Time: Religion

CHAPTER

Githa

The githa occurs historically at cross roads of a tremendous amount of synthesizing effort in hindoo tradition and religion. You've got influences from all sides, within the vedic tradition, which is the more orthodox tradition of hindos,. And also from those who had positioned themselves outside it, like the buddhists, for example, and various om wandering mendicants. The gita is facing a very major tension in the culture between this new ascetic mode of religion with people leaving their homes to focus on other worldly goals.
