The Kardashev Scale

The Kardashev scale was suggested by a physicist to imagine how civilizations will grow specifically in their energy use. It's broken into three categories where you think about all the energy available on a planet, another way you think aboutAll the energy available in the solar system, and then a third where you thinkabout all the energyavailable in the galaxy. So like a stage one civilization is one that only has the energy of a planet available to them or alternatively you assume that they have access to all the energy that a planet can have.
