The Importance of Background Understanding in the Language Game
Wittgenstein and Austin were interested in the way in which speaking is a kind of acting. Both thought that where one ordinarily gets away with saying things, one's dependent on fine detail or nuance to make it work. In effect, Wittgenstein would have thought it was impossible to do substantive philosophy. By contrast, he thinks that philosophy ought to be possible and must be substantive.
