The History of Sparta

Sparta became the first polis to be in control of a coalition of states, which the ancient Greeks referred to as Sparta and its allies. The adoption of the Achaen, or pre-Dorian, Orestes as a Spartan hero was the clever use of propaganda by the Spartans. As we have discussed, Sparta repeatedly assisted other Greek states in order to suppress tyrannies. In 546 BC, Lydian king Carecis had sent envoys requesting an alliance against Persia. Based on doing so, the Spartans learned to yield to formidable rival Herodotus.
