I suspect that we often take a religion as something that has organically grown and then started to dominate the world. I think it was a project that Catholicism had when they saw the Failing Woman Empire and decided to turn it into a card. And cards have drawbacks because they limit the rationality of the individual, but they also bind individuals into a structure of meaning and coordinate their actions. There's a certain brutality that happens when you violate the rational autonomy of individuals. People are strongly incentivized to believe in whatever the cult is telling them, even if it's factually untrue.
