The Unavoidable Negative Feeling of Solitude
Solitude is a fluid concept ranging from the depths of loneliness to the saint's mystic rapture. In most languages, French, German, for example, and we recently discovered perhaps Korean as well, solitude has got an unavoidable negative feel to it. So how do you translate this book into German? It's not easy. There's no single word in German that corresponds to how the word solitude is used in English. The whole therapeutic tradition is basically helping us to live alone,. to be able to live at ease and leisure with ourselves. That's Montaigne's definition again.
