Frederick the Great of Prussia
Great Lives
The Impossibility of German as a Language of Reason
He shocks Europe by invading Silesia in December 1740 and then spends the next five years holding on to it. Frederick knew that if he didn't take Silesia, then pretty soon the Saxons would try to do that. His father was far more obsessed with building up an army than he was with using it. He's still ranting about the impossibility of German as a language of reason and literature towards the end of his life.
