Hong kong was continuous. It had a constant in and out flow of people, especially of people who were crucial in the formation of chinese nationalism. That's where they sought shelter when they were being persecuted by the ching dynasty. You havent t have that admixture in tiwan. What tiwan was just always more separate. And so the what the culture and the history of the place is, is not tied up in that recent, extremely eventful, last, like half century of try it mainland chinese history.
