The Invisible Primary

There's nothing in the United States Constitution that says how presidential candidates will be picked by parties. So for more than two centuries, the American people had been wrestling with how democratic the process should be. It was really only in the early 20th century that the modern primary system began. The order of the states changes every cycle, but it always begins with Iowa followed by New Hampshire.
