Marks says that under capitalism working-class human beings are nothing but their labor political economy or as we know it today economics really has no place for the non-working human in its analysis other than as a data point in the unemployment numbers. Workers internalize this and thus tie their self-conception to their productivity and status within the capitalist hierarchy, which is worth paying attention to.
