Bertolt Brecht became a convert to the cause of communism in the 1920s. In 1941, he emigrated to the United States and chose to settle in Los Angeles. He wrote screenplays with a pointedly anti-capitalist slant but had little success there. The U.S. Congress's House on American Activities Committee began its investigation into supposed communist infiltration in Hollywood. It began to gather information on Brecht who had so openly espoused Marxism.
