Massimo Piliucci's new book How to Be a Stoic is about the religious nature of stoicism. In his imaginary conversation with Epictetus, he argues that David Hume and Charles Darwin can't land a blow on the imminent God of stoicism which providentially orders the cosmos from within. However, what Piliucci and other modern reductionist materialists fail to tell their audience is that their nineteenth century conception of reality is itself unsustainable in light of twentieth century quantum discoveries and modern theories of consciousness.
