optogenetics is a technique that uses light to activate cells in the brain. It can be done by using fibre optics or holographic methods, which are both cheap and effective. The method has been pioneered by Dr Michael Bostrom at Harvard University. He says it could one day lead to new treatments for cancer as well as other diseases.
