Nikolai Chachescu is a quiet figure for most of this. He does not stick his neck out, uh, try to take any big fancy jobs for himself. At 27, he was the leader of the communist youth organization and later of the central committee of the Romanian Workers Party. His meteoric rise continued, culminating with his election at age 37 to the Politburo as minister of the interior.
