The most galling part of the managed NAT gateway service is not that it's expensive, but also incredibly good at what it does. What we used to use was NAT instances. That was the thing that we used because we didn't really have another option. And they had an interface in the public subnet where they lived and an interface hanging out in the private subnet. You don't have to think about this whole problem anymore.
