In 10 years, Social Security will be able to pay about 75% of currently promised benefits. That is based on the rules that they are currently written. Because Social Security is a government program, it can be changed at any time with the stroke of a pen. There are a number of ways to avert this coming shortfall. It's just a matter of getting the political will to pass them.
