The Great Library of Alexandria
The great library of alexandria was not lost in one dramatic moment. It was steadily ground to dust by the many calamities of history. By the time the library finally ceased to exist, it had long stopped being an irreplaceable collection of ancient knowledge. The loss of written culture that accompanied the dissolution of the roman empire was kind of a bad thing, but it's straight up ridiculous to claim that if the library of a lexandria had survived, we would have put a man on the moon by the 17 hundreds.
