Hidden Forces

CHAPTER

Is There a Difference Between Defensive and Offense Realists?

There is a distinction between you and john's view of realism, that of defensive and offensive. Can you just explain what that is for listeners? I think the principal difference is, john is really a pure structuralistor. It's the the distribution of capabilities that really matters most. For defensive realists like me, there are two main differences. First, although we recognize that states cannot know intentions with a hundred % certainty, we believe that states can still make intelligent judgments about intentions. A second difference is that defensive realists believe in some circumstances it's possible to construct military postures that are less threatening to others. And nuclear weapons, by the way, are a perfect illustration of this.
