I read it as he buys it for himself and then she ends up with it at the end. It's also kind of he sits up there for a long time looking at it feels like he's really kind of mulling over whether or not to buy it. I think that's one of the points of tension maybe where there's frustration looking back on things in this book. He knows whenever he lets his issues affect Sophie that he knows when that line has been crossed and that's when he apologizes. There's a lot of a few other details like that.
