The ideology of meritocracy is actually has been a very successful deterrent to class consciousness, says Richard Vedder. But it can also create a crisis of expectations, he adds. In the United Kingdom in 2017 many working-class voters turned out to vote for a radical left Labour Party because they weren't getting their due and that Labour was speaking to them.
