Homosexuals faced harassment from the police, entrapment and physical abuse at the hands of the authorities. For a transwoman of color like martia p johnson, that oppression meant the constant threat of arrest. Back then, if you were wearing fewer than three items of clothing that are lined with your legal assigned gender, you could be arrested. That gave the police broad authority to harass and humiliate people who didn't conform to the gender norms of the time.
