The Value of Rating Prediction in Online Recommendations
There are still many papers that purely do that evaluation based on a random time splits and looking at something like recall at K on the movie lens data set. And so we know that that's a flawed evaluation procedure when you're looking to increase metrics of user engagement in a real online system. But if your system is really, really good at rating prediction, then it's probably also going to be a decent recommender in the real world if you actually show things to users and want clicks for example.
