The sons of great men like pender were raised with the help of nursemaids. A seventh century holy man will hear more about cuthbert, described his early life running with his mates in gangs. An eighth century writer describes digging foxes out of their holes and hunting hares. Feasts could be elaborate, especially in the autumn, when there was food to be eaten that could not be preserved. Guests made sure they had the anglo saxon equivalent of their sunday best kept by just for such special occasions. Bead famously, when he died, handed on prized possessions of pepper.
