The Importance of Ethnic Russians in the Donbas
The collapse of the Soviet Union turned out to be an absolute disaster for people in Ukraine who identify as Russians. The Communist Party elites were replaced either by gangsters or by political elites who turned themselves into economic elites. And these new elites, they cling to those sectors of the economy that could generate capital. In Ukraine you had these oligarchic groups basically formed political blocs. They also use the ethnic issue for basically to support their economic positions.
