There's been a long standing misconception that you need to oxidize fat in order to become better at oxidation. In reality, your muscles are quite good at oxidizing fat, even in the untrained state. If carbohydrate availability is restricted, you can exercise all the way up to 70% of VO2 max with an R point seven. It's not necessarily pleasant, but you can provide the energy.
